The Käsmu Peninsula is a gravel ridge formed during the last deglaciation, and its northern shore is strewn with large, rounded glacial erratic boulders. In the 19th century Käsmu was home to a maritime school, and its sea-captain residents earned the village the nickname 'Village of Captains'.

The Käsmu Hiking Trail loops around the Käsmu Peninsula, offering views of both the Gulf of Finland and the sheltered waters of Käsmu Bay. The trail passes through a maritime village, mosaic landscapes of coastal boulders, and forest tracks.

The shore path on the northern part of the peninsula is rocky and calls for sturdy footwear. In places you have to make short hops between the boulders.

Seasonal access

In winter, the frozen Käsmu Bay offers a unique sight. In July and August the village fills with tourists — early morning is quieter.
