Viru Bog is a raised bog roughly 10,000 years old, where the peat reaches up to 7 metres thick in places. The wooden boardwalk floats above the peat surface and runs across the open bog expanse, from where the Lahemaa coastline is visible in fine weather.

The Viru Bog Trail takes visitors into the heart of one of Estonia's most beautiful raised bogs. Information boards along the loop trail explain how the bog formed, the rich diversity of peat mosses, and the origin of the bog pools. The trail is the most popular hiking destination in Lahemaa National Park.

The boardwalk is 1.2 m wide and lifts walkers above the peat surface, so the trail is comfortable to follow even after rainy weather. The open bog expanse is exposed to the wind — in autumn, when the weather changes abruptly, the temperature can drop by 8–10 degrees within a few hours.

Seasonal access

The trail is passable year-round. In winter the snow gives the bog an atmospheric look, but the boardwalk can be slippery. During the spring thaw some of the planks along the boardwalk are wet.
