The Poruni area is known for its 'forest island' — one of Estonia's least-visited forests — a stretch of pine woodland encircled by swamp forest that serves as a habitat for animals much like an island.

The Poruni Trail runs through the southern part of the Alutaguse forests, where old-growth swamp forests alternate with sandy pine stands. The forest silence is broken only by the rustle of wind in the upper branches.
