The Kotka trail crosses a vast mire lying within Estonia's largest natural-landscape area — a great flood-mosaic mire whose pre-glacial landform has remained unchanged. Ospreys nest in the area every year.

The Kotka Hiking Trail is the most demanding and most beautiful day hike in Alutaguse National Park, winding through primeval forests and mire landscapes near Lake Peipsi. Along the way lie several hard-to-reach natural gems.

This mire-landscape trail requires rubber boots or waterproof hiking footwear. Some sections are wet year-round.

Seasonal access

The best time is June–September. In spring, meltwater stands high over the mire.
