The Kurtna lake district comprises over 40 lakes across an area of 30 km², which formed in Ice Age meltwater channels in deposits overlying Devonian sandstone. In summer, the deep-water temperature can differ by as much as 15 degrees between some of the lakes.

The Kurtna Lake Trail introduces the Kurtna lake district — Estonia's richest lake region outside the Haanja Uplands. The 17 km loop passes nearly ten lakes and offers several swimming spots.

The trail is mostly a sandy forest road, with soft ground in some places. Sections along the lakeshores can be wet.

Seasonal access

From July to August the lakes have warmed up for swimming. In winter, the lake ice offers an extraordinary sight.
