The Koiva River (Gauja in Latvian) is a transboundary river that originates in Estonia, in Karula. The trail passes through an area where the course of the Estonian–Latvian border through former villages has left distinctive marks on the cultural landscape.

The Koiva Heritage Culture Trail follows the cultural history of the Koiva River valley, where traces of settlement reach from the Bronze Age to the present day. Information boards introduce farm histories and folklore.
