The Sõrve Peninsula is historically a landscape of World War II battles — in 1944 the Battle of Sõrve took place here, one of the last attempts by German forces to hold the front in Estonia. Walls and tunnels from that period remain along the trail.

The Viirelisti Nature Trail introduces the natural and cultural values of the alvars of the Sõrve Peninsula. Sõrve is the southern tip of Saaremaa, where alvar juniper scrub, coastal boulders and traces of wartime history form a unique mosaic.

The alvar landscape typically lies on a limestone slab, with thin soils in places. Suitable for walking on foot.
