The Penijõe estuary is one of Estonia's most important bird-nesting areas — over 180 bird species nest here, including the greylag goose, swans and several species of tern.

The Penijõe Trail runs between the coastal meadows and reed beds of Matsalu Bay, where the spring migration brings tens of thousands of geese, ruffs and ducks. From the viewing platform you can take in the open expanse of Matsalu Bay.

In spring the coastal meadows are wet and rubber boots are recommended. In summer the paths are usually dry.

Seasonal access

The best time for birdwatching is April–May (spring migration) and July–August (summer visitors).
