The Kutioru area is the core of the Haanja Heights, where some of Estonia's oldest birch groves grow on the tops of moraine hills. The highest point in the area rises over 300 m above sea level.

The Kutioru Hiking Trail is one of the longest trails in Haanja Nature Park, passing through varied hilly terrain, valleys, and pine forests. The autumn foliage is especially beautiful.

The hilly terrain means repeated climbs and descents. Some valley slopes are slippery after rain.
