Alam-Pedja is Estonia's largest free-flooding floodplain forest. The spring flood sometimes covers more than 100 km² and creates a freshwater inland sea, where fish spawn directly in the meadow water.

The Selli-Sillaotsa nature trail is the main hiking trail of the Alam-Pedja Nature Reserve, leading through the floodplain landscape of the Pedja River. In spring the water rises over the meadows and the boardwalk runs across the water — a rare sight.

The boardwalk is raised above the floodplain, but in spring parts of the boardwalk also get flooded. In wet weather rubber boots are recommended.

Seasonal access

The spring flood is a sight in itself — it usually arrives in late April. In summer the wooded-meadow section is rich in grasses and butterflies.
