Frequently asked questions

What are the waves like?

Wave height depends on wind strength and how long it blows. In autumn storms, waves in the Gulf of Finland often exceed two metres, while in summer the sea is mostly calm. You can see the current waves on puhub's wave layer.

When is the best time for sailing?

The best time for sailing is June to August, when winds are steadier and storm risk is low. In September and October low-pressure systems and strong winds become more frequent.

How warm is the sea in summer?

The Baltic surface water warms to about 17–20 °C along the coast in July and August, a couple of degrees less offshore. Strong wind mixes the warm surface layer and cools the water quickly.

When does Pärnu Bay freeze over?

Pärnu Bay freezes only in cold winters, mainly in January and February. The area's average January air temperature is -3.3°C, which often leaves the open water ice-free.

What is the weather like in summer?

The warmest month is July, averaging 18.5°C. The sea keeps the coastal weather even: a sea breeze often blows during the day and night frosts are rare.
